James Castle:
His Life and Art
A
new biography titled James Castle: His Life and Art explores
the life, genius and motivation behind one of Idaho’s greatest
enigmas. Written by Tom Trusky, a Castle expert, director of the
Hemingway Western Studies Center and Boise State University English
professor, the book contains rare documents and photographs,
exclusive interviews with Castle’s family and childhood friends and
the testimony of contemporary art and medical experts.

State Hosts Aug. 13 Candidate Forum
Boise State
University’s Department of Public Policy and Administration will
host an information forum for legislative and county commission
candidates in the 10-county region. The forum will be from 9 a.m.-4
p.m. Aug. 13 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom. Topics and
presenters are:

Economic outlook, presented by John Church, Boise State special
lecturer in economics and president of Idaho Economics, and Mike
Ferguson, chief economist for the Idaho Division of Financial
Management.

State and local tax policy, presented by Randy Nelson, president
of the Associated Taxpayers of Idaho, and Dan John,
administrator for the legal and tax policy division of the Idaho
Tax Commission.

State and local budgets and expenditure patterns, presented by
Jeff Youtz, supervisor of budget and policy analysis for the
Legislative Services Office, and Dan Chadwick, executive
director of the Idaho Association of Counties.

Media relations, presented by Marty Peterson, special assistant
to the president for the University of Idaho and former
community member of The Idaho Statesman editorial board, and
Jennifer Swindell, state editor for The Idaho Statesman.

Campaign finance reporting requirements, presented by Tim Hurst,
chief deputy Secretary of State.

Trends in public policy surveys, presented by Jim Weatherby,
chair of the Boise State University Department of Public Policy
and Administration.

CEEHS
Offers Hazardous Waste Training
Boise State’s Center for Excellence for
Environmental Health and Safety (CEEHS) and the College of Health
Sciences’ Environmental Health Program are offering a unique,
combined training course for civilian and military personnel at
Mountain Home Air Force Base. This combined course, which began this
week, meets the OSHA requirements published in CFR 1910.120 for
personnel who work in operations involving hazardous waste and/or
are involved with emergency response.
The courses being offered are a 40-hour hazardous waste operations
and emergency response training course, a 24-hour oil spill response
training course and an 8-hour refresher course on hazardous waste
operations and emergency response.
To meet the demand of industrial clients
state- and region-wide, CEEHS and the Environmental Health Program
anticipate offering this and other health-related courses on a
continual basis. For more information on this or other scheduled

Morrison Center Announces New Family Theater Series

The Morrison Center for the
Performing Arts, housed on the Boise State University campus,
continues its dedication to the Treasure Valley community with its
first-ever theater series specifically targeted to a family
audience. The 2004-2005 Family Series presents four delightfully
creative productions that prove that live theater can impact the
senses like no other form of entertainment.
Season tickets are now on sale; priority seating deadline is Aug.
30. Subscription packages run from $54-$72.

Frontline
Staff Training Program
A special
information session is being offered prior to the start of the
semester to provide frontline classified staff (customer service
representatives, receptionists, assistants that work closely with
students) with updated information on policies, procedures, and
deadlines that occur at the start of the semester. This program has
been instituted on campus to assist front-line staff in providing
students with accurate information and referrals.
The training will
be held on , 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.,
Thursday, Aug. 12 in the
Jordan C Ballroom of the Student Union Building. This program
has been very well received and fills up quickly. Participation is
limited to the first 85 registrants.
In addition to this
training, the reference manual used in the training will be
available Monday, August 9, online by
clicking here. Anyone who works with students is encouraged to
visit this link to access this valuable information.
The vice president
of Student Affairs and the dean of Enrollment Services host this
program. They reserve the right to limit participation to
frontline classified staff and to limit the number of
participants from any one department. There will be a $25 “no
show”
charge for registrants who fail to attend.

Jim Weatherby, public policy and
administration, was quoted in a July 11 (Lewiston) Morning
Tribune story on changes in state education funding fueled by
the surge in charter schools.
Rick Ritter, TECenter, was quoted in an
Aug. 2 Statesman story on Meridian’s new economic development
coordinator.
John Freemuth, political science and Andrus
Center for Public Policy, presented a session titled “The
policy landscape of the sagebrush ecosystem” at the ESA 89th
Annual Meeting. “Fighting the Odds: The Challenge to Save the
Sagebrush Biome” was held this week in Portland.
