Boise State University Hosts 'The Business of Climate Change' as Part of National Focus the Nation Events

The Idaho Small Business Development Center at Boise State University will present “The Business of Climate Change — Risk and Opportunity,” a symposium designed to help businesses create successful climate change strategies, on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The symposium will run from noon-4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom on the Boise State campus, followed by a reception. The program will feature Paul Kjellander, administrator of the Office of Energy Resources; speakers who have helped Nike and Patagonia reduce their greenhouse gases; and Boise State faculty. It is part of a series of Focus the Nation events Jan. 30-31 on the Boise State campus. Focus the Nation is an unprecedented national educational initiative on global warming solutions for America at more than 1,300 universities and colleges and in all 50 states.

The cost for the business symposium is $45 and includes lunch, a reception and parking. Boise State students, faculty and staff may choose a non-lunch option and attend for no cost. The schedule is as follows:

— Noon-1:30 p.m. Lunch and opening presentations titled “Idaho’s Energy Future” by Kjellander, and “The Business Case for Proactive Climate Strategy” by Phil Berry, president of Sustainable Product Works and former director of footwear sustainability for Nike Inc.

— 1:40-2:30 p.m. “Economics of Climate Change: Reducing Your Footprint” by Scott Lowe, assistant professor, Boise State College of Business and Economics, and Blake Nicolazzo, business manager for Montana and Wyoming, Patagonia Inc.

— 2:40-3:30 p.m. “Climate Change Impacts in the Supply Chain” by Tom Gattiker, assistant professor, Boise State College of Business and Economics, and Lisa Leff, vice president, Trillium Asset Management

— 3:40-4:30 p.m. “Energy Opportunities” by John Gardner, associate vice president for energy research policy and campus sustainability at Boise State, and Ric Gale, vice president of regulatory affairs for Idaho Power

— 4:30 p.m. Reception/poster session

The goal of Focus the Nation is to jump-start a national discussion on the goal of “stabilizing the climate in the 21st century.” The program will culminate on Jan. 31 with a one-day, national symposia held simultaneously on campuses across the country.

At Boise State, Focus the Nation events will include a series of classes and seminars to educate the university community about causes and effects of global change, discussions with government and business leaders about solutions to climate change, and the calculation of Boise State’s carbon footprint. Boise area schools will participate in Focus the Nation.
