Boise State Capital Scholars Program Provides Renewable $1,000 Scholarships for High School Juniors

Hundreds of Idaho high school juniors will be notified in February by mail that they are eligible for a renewable $1,000 scholarship for up to five years to attend Boise State University through its Capital Scholars academic achievement program. The scholarship fund is endowed by the Linda Yanke family and sales proceeds from the Boise State Bookstore.

Selection is based on college entrance examination scores and class rankings. All Idaho high school juniors who score in the top 10 percent of the ACT, SAT or PSAT and rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class will be recognized as Boise State Capital Scholars. The cut-off scores to qualify in the top 10 percent of the college entrance exams are: 27 or higher on the ACT, 1220 or higher on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT, or 122 or higher on the critical reading and math sections of the PSAT.

“Boise State University is committed to providing scholarship opportunities for high-ability undergraduate students,” said President Bob Kustra. “Every year the number of participants in the Boise State Capital Scholars program has increased, reflecting our desire to attract the best and brightest students in Idaho and reward them with financial support.”

Honorees will be invited to Boise State on April 8 along with their parents or guardians for campus tours, discussions with academic deans, and demonstrations highlighting research and teaching. Activities culminate with an evening dinner and awards program where students will receive the renewable $1,000 scholarship to Boise State for up to five years. Capital Scholars must attend the April 8 program in Boise to be eligible for the scholarship.

Since the program’s inception in 2005, a total of 170 Idaho students have received renewable $1,000 scholarships upon matriculation as Boise State Capital Scholars. Recipients have come from all parts of the Treasure Valley and the state, including Pocatello, Twin Falls, Lewiston, Garden Valley, Payette, Rupert, Iona, Kamiah, Bonners Ferry, Salmon and Hagerman.

Boise State University is emerging as a metropolitan research university of distinction. This transformation is being powered by the university’s first comprehensive campaign to support students, faculty, strategic initiatives, research and infrastructure. That’s why the campaign to raise $175 million in private support is called Destination Distinction.
