The Boise State University Talkin’ Broncos continued their strong season with a win that garnered the overall sweepstakes award in the Northwest Forensics Conference. The award is based on overall team performance at three designated NFC tournaments.

Three Talkin’ Broncos were honored for their individual accomplishments in speech and debate at the William O. Erik Sande (junior, Boise) was a top-ten finisher for the Iverson award, and Chad Judy (senior, Idaho Falls) was recognized as one of the ten best speakers overall in the NFC with the 2008 Coach’s Commemorative Award.

Boise competitors were named as the top debaters in a field of 20 schools at the tournament, with Huseynov, Regan Charlton (sophomore, Inkom) and Aaron Olson (freshman, Bremerton, Wash.) all placing within the top ten among more than 160 debaters.

In novice parliamentary debate, Huseynov and Olson were finalists, taking second overall at the tournament. The team of Charlton and Kate Henry (sophomore, Coeur d’Alene) finished as quarter-finalist in junior division debate, and the novice division team of Adam Siler (freshman, Meridian) and Nick Fowler (senior, Wendell) also advanced through the final rounds of debate, finishing as quarter-finalists.

In individual events, Ben Bishop (junior, Meridian) led the Talkin’ Broncos in scoring with a first-place finish in Informative Speaking, a second-place finish in Rhetorical Criticism and a fourth-place finish in Impromptu Speaking. Other top finishes included Alex Dorofeev (junior, Murmansk, Russia), who placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking and was a finalist in Impromptu Speaking; Ben Larsen (freshman, Raft River) who placed first in novice Oral Interpretation of Poetry; and Olson, who placed first in Persuasive Speaking. Other top award-winners for Boise State were Charlton, who placed fourth in Informative Speaking and was a finalist in both Oral Interpretation of Poetry and Persuasive Speaking; Huseynov, who placed second in Persuasive Speaking and was a semi-finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking; Sande, who placed fifth in Impromptu Speaking and was a semi-finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking; and Henry, who placed fourth in Oral Interpretation of Drama.
