23, 2005, when it formed, to its aftermath. The poet Mark Doty wrote, “With
her radiant powers of empathy, her fiercely acute ear for the musical
possibilities of American speech, and her undiluted rage, Patricia Smith
makes in Katrina’s wake a sorrowful, unflinching, and glorious book.” She
also is the author of “Teahouse of the Almighty,” which was a National
Poetry Series winner.
• The keynote presentation at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Student Union Jordan
Ballroom will feature noted activist, feminist and author Rebecca Walker.
Walker’s most recent book is the memoir “Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood
After a Lifetime of Ambivalence.” Her other works include “Black, White and
Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self” and “To Be Real: Telling the Truth
and Changing the Face of Feminism.” Walker is considered one of the foremost
voices of “third-wave” feminism and has spoken at universities such as MIT
and Stanford as well as in front of companies such as Microsoft and Sony
Music.
