News Release BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / January 12, 2009 Boise State University Student Union Expansion Open for Business in Time for Students' Return to Campus Boise State University students will return this spring semester to an expanded, state-of-the-art Student Union Building that has grown from 185,000 to 252,000 square feet. The addition opened today and the Student Union will be ramping up this week in preparation for the first day of classes on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The expansion includes new student organization offices, ASBSU senate and staff offices, a new dining facility located on the first floor, expanded student lounges and study areas, a new Bronco Shop and a New Student and Family Programs office suite. The new Boise River Café replaces the Table Rock Café and will be open to the public each day this week from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for a reduced lunch rate of $6. The Student Union is the most frequented building on campus with more than 6,000 visitors per day. That number is expected to climb with the additional 67,000 new square feet of space. “The most significant detail of the expansion is that it really opens up the Student Union for our students,” said Jack Rahmann, Student Union director. “That’s a primary goal of the entire project. Especially notable is the new location for student government and student organizations. They have the premiere location in the building and that was intentional. It is lively, architecturally open and designed to engage more students in all that we have to offer them.” Portions of the project were completed earlier this fall, including a new campus ID office, new Games Center, Pulse Student Radio production studio, Bronco Express and new entrances and patios. The $30 million project also includes a new Grand Ballroom (opening in March), and remodel of 27,000 square feet of the existing building including the convenience store, Student Union administrative offices, bookstore offices and the Boise State Women’s Center (new location on the second floor of the SUB). The remodel will be complete by August 2009, bringing the full project to a close. “We will celebrate our university in a more visual way throughout the building,” Rahmann said. “The new Student Union is reflective of this growing, dynamic campus.” -30- Contact: Sherry Squires, University Communications, (208) 426-1563, ssquires@boisestate.edu Boise State University is “The New U Rising” with record student enrollment, new academic buildings, additional degree programs and a growing research agenda.
