EXHIBITIONS:
“Silver Lining: Recent Drawings and a New Installation by Angie Zielinski.” Jan. 20-Feb. 17. Visual Arts Center Gallery 2, Hemingway Western Studies Center. Reception 6-8 p.m. Jan. 30. Zielinski is a cross-disciplinary artist, pulling from the influence of abstraction while exploring the possibilities of installation. Free.

“Greener Solutions Juried Art Exhibition.” Through Feb. 16. Student Union Gallery. Reception 4:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 29. This exhibition, initiated and coordinated by student Nick Sutfin, addresses many of the important issues surrounding global climate change. Free.

Monday, Jan. 19
MLK Annual March and Rally. Student Union. 9:30 a.m. Marchers may gather in the Student Union Building Hatch Ballroom on the second floor at 9:30 a.m.; the march begins at 10:45 a.m. and will culminate in a rally at the Boise City Hall Plaza. Tuesday, Jan. 20
MLK Poetry Slam Featuring Patricia Smith. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 7 p.m. Reception and book signing at 8 p.m. Smith is a well-known poetry performer who has read her work at venues from Stockholm to Georgia. Her book of poetry, “Blood Dazzler,” was a 2008 National Book Award Finalist. The book follows Hurricane Katrina from Aug. 23, 2005, when it formed, to its aftermath. The poet Mark Doty wrote, “With her radiant powers of empathy, her fiercely acute ear for the musical possibilities of American speech, and her undiluted rage, Patricia Smith makes in Katrina’s wake a sorrowful, unflinching, and glorious book.” She also is the author of “Teahouse of the Almighty,” which was a National Poetry Series winner. MLK Presentation Featuring Author Rebecca Walker. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6 p.m. Walker’s most recent book is the memoir “Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood After a Lifetime of Ambivalence.” Her other works include “Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self” and “To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism.” Walker is considered one of the foremost voices of “third-wave” feminism and has spoken at universities such as MIT and Stanford as well as in front of companies such as Microsoft and Sony Music. Jerry Seinfeld. Morrison Center. 7 p.m. Seinfeld has been called the “Master stand-up comic of his generation” and “the best comedian of our time” by the Washington Post. Tuesday, Jan. 27
Diverse Perspectives Film Series: “Tulia, Texas.” 5:30-7 p.m. Student Union Hatch B Ballroom. In 1999, undercover narcotics agent Thomas Coleman executed one of the biggest drug stings in Texas history. Coleman and his drug task force arrested 46 Tulia residents on charges of suspected drug dealing. Thirty-nine were African American. Years later, suspicions rose about the credibility of Coleman’s testimony and cracks began to show. “Tulia, Texas” is the story of a small town’s search for justice. Free.

Tuesday, Feb. 3
“Pajama Game.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Broadway in Boise presents “The Pajama Game,” a musical based on the novel “7 ½ Cents,” by Richard Bissell. The story takes place in a disrupted pajama factory, where the unhappy workers demand a higher wage. Amongst the fighting, a love develops between two workers. “Pajama Game” offers a story filled with love, music and comedy. $25-$46.
