EVENT NEWS RELEASE / January 22, 2009

The Public is Invited to Discover Engineering at Boise State University Jan. 31

The Boise State University College of Engineering invites the public to Discover Engineering Day from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31. The free, annual event typically draws about 3,000 community members and is designed to inform, entertain and inspire with 31 hands-on activities.

With the help of engineering faculty and students and industry volunteers, participants can build a glider with a NASA specialist, generate power with a bicycle, launch catapults in the Science Olympiad, make instant snow and magic sand, learn the language of computers with jelly beans and explore physics with “Bungie Barbie,” to name a few of the activities spanning five campus venues.

The hope is that young people will gain and foster interests in engineering disciplines and that older people will better understand how vital engineering is to the functions of everyday life.

Holly MacLean, principal of the Treasure Valley Mathematics and Science Center, attended a past Discover Engineering Day and commented, “My sons had a great time. They loved having such a variety of things to try out. I was so impressed with the quality of demonstrations and the ability of the presenters to bring it down to an understandable level for such diverse audiences. Every one of the people that we listened to turned out to be excellent.”

Leading up to the Jan. 31 public event is Boise State’s Engineering Extravaganza, an educational adventure for elementary school students happening Tuesday Jan. 27-Thursday Jan. 29. (Note: photo, video and interview opportunities will be available.)

Both the Engineering Extravaganza and Discover Engineering Day are presented in conjunction with National Engineering Month, which promotes engineering professions and celebrates the creative contributions engineers make to improve quality of life worldwide.

“This is a great family opportunity for people of all ages to have fun together while also learning about some of the creative and important work that engineers do,” said Cheryl Schrader, dean of Boise State’s College of Engineering. “We encourage everyone to join us Jan. 31.”

Check in will be at the Engineering and Technology Building, 1375 University Drive, or at the Kinesiology Building, 1404 Bronco Circle. Free parking is available in the Bronco Stadium lot, the Lincoln Parking Garage, and the lot on the east side of the Engineering and Technology Building.
