BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / January 23, 2009

Despite Hard Economic Times, $200,000 in Engineering Scholarships is Available at Boise State University

High school seniors interested in pursuing engineering degrees at Boise State University are in luck. Up to $200,000 in scholarships for freshmen engineering students is expected to be available thanks to a National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarship program.

The deadline for applications is February 15, 2009. Candidates who will be freshmen engineering students at Boise State University in the fall of 2009 can apply for two-year scholarships of up to $10,000 per year if they reside in the College of Engineering residential college. NSF scholarships will provide up to $5,000 a year for two years for recipients who don’t participate in the residential college program. All NSF scholars will receive many professional and enrichment opportunities to enhance their engineering education.

The College of Engineering expects to award about 15 scholarships and encourages Idaho students to apply. Out of state students also are welcome to apply, as are current Boise State students or transfer students who are just beginning freshman level classes in the College of Engineering.

Students are eligible to apply immediately. Application forms and instructions are available on the College of Engineering Web site at http://coen.boisestate.edu.  Eligible students must be freshmen at Boise State in fall 2009 majoring in materials science and engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering or computer science. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must demonstrate financial need in order to qualify and then will be selected based on academic merit. The application explains that students also must fill out the free financial aid form by February 15, and the Web site links to other scholarship opportunities.
