News Release BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / January 27, 2009 Note: The original release sent Jan. 26 regarding the National Teach-In at Boise State University did not include the second day of the event and related details. Also, the event Web site was updated and given a new URL. See details below. Boise State University to Take Part in National Teach-In on Global Warming Feb. 4 and 5 Boise State University will bring together a multidisciplinary group of faculty experts as part of the National Teach-In on Global Warming with a series of eye-opening lectures Feb. 4 and 5 in the Student Union Special Events Center. The grassroots educational movement started with one day of action in Jan. 2008. Boise State University held a range of lectures and activities that year as part of Focus the Nation, a large-scale, cooperative effort to promote education about climate change. Then-senator and presidential hopeful Barack Obama was at Clemson University for the 2008 kick-off and commented: “This is an important issue; I want everybody to be involved with it, everybody to be paying attention.” In 2009, the aim of the National Teach-In is to spark 100 days of civic engagement coinciding with the first 100 days of the Obama administration. More than 100 million Americans are expected to participate in solutions-driven dialogue about global environmental and energy issues at Teach-In events at colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, faith groups, civic organizations and businesses all over the country. By providing opportunities for community education, organizers hope to foster an informed, engaged and active citizenry devoted to sustainable change. “This is part of our mission, to bring together our own faculty experts to share their knowledge with the community on this important topic,” said John Gardner, Boise State’s associate vice president for energy research, policy and campus sustainability and a featured lecturer at the Teach-In. “It’s all about education, because it’s clear that in the next several years, we are going to have a nationwide discussion and debate about the future of energy and about sustainability in general. There will be a lot of misinformation out there, and our mission is to get the information out in as clear and unbiased a way as we can.” One of the manifestations of that mission is the “Greener Solutions” fine art show that will be displayed in the Student Union gallery through Feb. 16. Organized by Boise State student Nick Sutfin, the exhibition features juried pieces created mostly with recycled materials that address issues of waste and climate change and the need for awareness and environmental stewardship. Augmenting the Teach-In is the Idaho Small Business Development Center’s “The Business of Climate Change: Creating Value with Climate Change Strategies,” a half-day business symposium to be held at the Stueckle Sky Center Feb. 3.
