Boise Jazz Society Presents Steinway and Blue Note Recording Artist Eliane Elias at the Stueckle Sky Center

Jazz artist Eliane Elias will perform as part of the Boise Jazz Society concert series at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Stueckle Sky Center RR Ranch Club at Bronco Stadium. Her appearance will include a free community jazz symposium preceding her concert and “Eliane Elias in Residence” events on Feb. 23.

The Boise Community Jazz Symposium will precede her concert at 4 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Stueckle Sky Center RR Ranch Club. This free event will give participants a chance to meet, hear and interact with Elias and her trio. She will discuss her musical style and give the audience an insider perspective on how her jazz is created.

Doors to her Feb. 22 concert open at 6:15 p.m. Admission to the concert, which features no-reserve, open nightclub seating, is $45 by calling (208) 426-3498 or e-mailing msamball@boisestate.edu. Afternoon and evening “Eliane Elias in Residence” events are scheduled for Feb. 23. For tickets or more information, call Dunkley Music at (208) 342-5549 or visit www.dunkleymusic.com

Elias is a native of Brazil and former child prodigy who is well versed in the work of artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim. Her recordings have often focused on her singing rather than her piano playing, but her recent album, “Something For You: Eliane Elias Sings and Plays Bill Evans,” broadens her range. The album was named the Best Vocal Album of the Year by Swing Journal. Her latest release, “Bossa Nova Stories,” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the bossa nova movement and debuted at no. 2 on iTunes jazz list.

Rex Reed of the New York Observer recently wrote, “Why Ms. Elias is not a much bigger star outside the enclave of jazz insiders eludes me. She looks like Gloria Steinem in her Playboy bunny days, plays like the late, great Bill Evans and pollinated with Chet Baker.”

The Boise Jazz Society is dedicated to raising awareness of jazz as art music; promoting live jazz performances; sponsoring jazz subscription-series concerts presented in an intimate, jazz-club environment; enhancing educational opportunities by producing a series of lectures, workshops and master classes; and providing information to the community on local and regional jazz activities.

Upcoming Boise Jazz Society concerts include the Hal Galper Trio on March 15 and the Anat Cohen Quartet on May 16. Additional information may be found at http://www.boisestate.edu/music/BJS or by contacting Mike Samball at 426-3498 or msamball@boisestate.edu.
