News Release EVENT NEWS / January 30, 2009 Boise State University Celebrates Black History Month With Read-In, Special Performances Boise State University will mark Black History Month in February with three special events that are open to the public. • 20th Annual African-American Read-In. 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Feb. 18, Student Union Brava! Stage, located in the first floor dining area. More than 1 million readers of all ethnic groups from 49 states, the West Indies and African countries have participated in national Read-In events. The event was initiated by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, and the group remains a co-sponsor. The event aims to make the celebration of African-American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. Boise State English professors will include African-American authors in their studies during February, as well. Student Union Special Events Center. $6 adults, $4 children, free for Boise State students. “Tired Souls” is a one-man show starring Mike Wiley, documenting the days following Rosa Parks’ refusal to relinquish her bus seat and the accounts of those who held tight to their bus money and walked for freedom for 381 days. Co-sponsored by the Morrison Center and the Boise State Cultural Center. For more information, call 426-5950. • Classic Performances Series: The Harlem Quartet. 8 p.m. Feb. 28. Student Union Special Events Center. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. $12 adults, $8 Boise State faculty, staff and alumni and $5 students and seniors through Select-a-Seat. The Harlem Quartet has a unique and challenging mission: to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. Free parking will be available in the Liberal Arts, Library and Administration parking lots during the performance.
