Boise State University Co-Sponsors 19th National African
American Read-In at the Idaho Black History Museum
Boise State University will co-sponsor the National African-American Read-In
from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Idaho Black History Museum, 508 Julia
Davis Drive, Boise. The Idaho Black History Museum, the Boise State Cultural
Center and the Department of English are sponsoring this 19th annual event,
which is in its second year in Boise.
This year’s event will feature an open mic event open to anyone interested
in reading literature written by an African-American author, poet or
essayist. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Cultural Center, located
on the second floor of the Boise State Student Union Building, or on-site
the day of the reading; participants can also call English professor Dora
Ramirez-Dhoore at 426-7081 or e-mail
doraramirez-dhoore@boisestate.edu. Readings can be as short as two
minutes or as long as 15 minutes.
More than 1 million readers of all ethnic groups from 49 states, the West
Indies and African countries have participated in previous national read-in
events. The event was initiated by the Black Caucus of the National Council
of Teachers of English, and the group remains a co-sponsor. The reading is
endorsed by the International Reading Association. The goal is to make the
celebration of African-American literacy a traditional part of Black History
Month activities.
For more information, contact Ramirez-Dhoore, the Idaho Black History Museum
at 433-0017, or Ro Parker at the Cultural Center at 426-5950.
