EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
MySpace/Facebook Lecture. Special Events Center. 7 p.m. For more details see Feb. 12.

EXHIBITIONS:
Through Feb. 16. “Unwrappers” by Brooke Burton. Student Union Gallery. Featuring work by recent MFA graduate Burton, incorporating digital techniques that address consumer culture. For more information, call 426-4636.

Through March 15. “The Quiet Art: A Drawing Retrospective by John Taye.” Gallery 1 in the Liberal Arts Building. Taye is retiring from Boise State after teaching in the Department of Art for many years. For more information about the exhibition or the reception, call Kirsten Furlong at 426-3994.

Monday, Feb. 11
19TH National African American Read-in. Idaho Black History Museum, 508 Julia Davis Drive. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. This year’s event will feature an open mic event open to anyone interested in reading literature written by an African-American author, poet or essayist. Free. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Cultural Center, located on the second floor of the Boise State Student Union Building, or on-site the day of the reading; participants can also call Boise State English professor Dora Ramirez-Dhoore at 426-7081 or e-mail doraramirez-dhoore@boisestate.edu

Tuesday, Feb. 12
MySpace/Facebook Lecture. Special Events Center. 7 p.m. This special lectures details the growing technology involved with MySpace, and how the educational system is lagging behind society. Wednesday, Feb. 13-14
Vocal Jazz Concert, Vocal Jazz Festival and Clinics. Student Union Building. Concert 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13. This Vocal Jazz concert will feature a guest artist. $5 general, $3 seniors, free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Thursday, Feb. 14
“Beowulf.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. This epic tale of love and betrayal is a high risk adventure. The film is rated PG-13. For more information, call 426-4636.

James McCauley LDSSA Lecture. LDS Institute building, 1929 University Drive. 12:15 p.m. McCauley is the founder and owner of Container Packaging Supply Company. Boise State’s Latter-day Saint Student Association will host a spring lecture series featuring 15 different guest speakers. Each lecture ranges from 35 to 40 minutes with refreshments served afterward. Free. For more information, contact the LDS Institute of Religion at 344-8549.

Pan-American Trio. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. Featuring Jennifer Sullivan, Arturo Chavez and Del Parkinson in their premier performance. Rachel Price. Morrison Center. 8 p.m. Part of the “Behind the Curtain” series aimed at introducing adventurous music lovers to up-and-coming artists of the highest caliber. International Connections. Student Union Hatch B Ballroom. 12:30 p.m. Kevin Kiely, Fullbright Scholar in Literature, will discuss “Celtic Dawn to Celtic Tiger.” This fast-forward cultural history of 20th century Ireland is specifically based on its writers and how they affected the nation and its people. Kiely will talk about Wilde, Bram Stoker, Shaw, Yeats, Synge, Joyce, Beckett, O’Casey, Behan and others. Free. For more information, call 426-3652.

Melanie Rae Thon Reading. Lookout Room. 7:30 p.m. Thon’s reading is part of the MFA Reading Series. Thon is the recipient of a Whiting Writer’s Award, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a writer’s residency from the Lannan Foundation. Thon’s most recent book is the novel “Sweet Hearts.” Her other works include “Meteors in August” and “Iona Moon” and the story collections “First, Body” “Girls in the Grass” and the recently completed “Heavenly Creatures.” Free. Vagina Monologues 2008.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Feb. 22. Screening of “Until the Violence Stops,” the Emmy-winning film about how “The Vagina Monologues” grew into V-Day, the movement to stop violence against women and girls. 7 p.m. Feb. 23 and 3 p.m. Feb. 24, Special Events Center: “The Vagina Monologues.” This year’s focus is on the “Katrina Warriors” of New Orleans and the Gulf South, highlighting the need for resources for this still-devastated community. BSU Symphony Orchestra. “Gypsy.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Part of the Broadway in Boise series. “Gypsy” reigns as one of the greatest Broadway musicals of the 20th century. Werner Hoeger LDSSA Lecture. LDS Institute building, 1929 University Drive. 12:15 p.m. Hoeger’s theme will be “The power of discipline, persistence and spirituality in the achievement of lifetime goals.” He will share how these factors have helped him in his family life, career and Olympic goals. Hoeger, an award-winning gymnast, Boise State professor and author, was the oldest male Olympic competitor in the sport of luge when he competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics. “People need a balance in life that includes the physical, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of wellness.” Hoeger said.
