Students Involved in Boise State University TRiO Programs to Hold Leadership Conference, National Day of Service

Students involved in Boise State University’s federally-funded TRiO programs, including students from the Duck Valley Upward Bound program, will participate in a Student Leadership Conference from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom. The next day, the students will work at a number of non-profits around the Treasure Valley as part of the TRiO National Day of Service.

The Student Leadership Conference will feature a keynote speaker and lunch with Idaho legislators, as well as presentation of a “Friend of TRiO” award, which will be awarded to Rep. Mike Simpson. Students will also brainstorm ways to help their communities develop a plan of action.

The next day, approximately 150 students will volunteer their time with the Boise Rescue Mission, the Idaho FoodBank, the Boise Christian Retirement Village, St. Vincent de Paul, the Boise Veterans Home, the Good Samaritan Society Village, Heatherwood Retirement Home, Ronald McDonald House and the Boys and Girls Club of Ada County. Students will do everything from cleaning to boxing food to playing bingo with veterans.

The TRiO National Day of Service is a way for students to show appreciation to their communities for their support. The TRiO Pre-College programs were established by Congress in 1965 to provide education opportunities for low-income students. Boise State is home to a number of TRiO programs, including Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, the TRiO Dissemination Partnership, Student Success Service, the College Assistance Migrant Program, the High School Equivalency Program and Multicultural Educational Opportunity.

Boise State University is emerging as a metropolitan research university of distinction. This transformation is being powered by the university’s first comprehensive campaign to support students, faculty, strategic initiatives, research and infrastructure. That’s why the campaign to raise $175 million in private support is called Destination Distinction.
