Boise State University Gene Harris Jazz Festival Gives Unsigned Acts a Shot at a Recording Contract

Unsigned jazz bands will get a shot at a recording contract during the first-ever Gene Harris Jazz Competition, one of the featured June events during the Boise State University Gene Harris Jazz Festival.

In cooperation with Origin Records, the festival is offering new or unknown jazz combos a chance to be a hit at the Jazz in June concerts. Ensembles can submit performances of their original works — videos, DVDs, CDs, or YouTube videos — by May 1. The submissions will be judged by Michael Deeds of the Idaho Statesman, Dee Sarton of KTVB, John Bishop of Origin Records and Rob Walker, a trumpeter, composer/arranger and jazz educator.

The competition finalists will compete at the Big Easy Concert House during Club Night, June 19. Concertgoers will get a chance to vote, and the winner will receive a recording contract with Origin Records and will open for Roy Haynes during the headline concert June 20 at the Morrison Center.

For detailed information about the contest, including rules, submission fees, contact information and more, visit http://geneharris.org. For questions, call festival director Brad Peters at 426-3099 or bpeters@boisestate.edu

Boise State University is emerging as a metropolitan research university of distinction. This transformation is being powered by the university’s first comprehensive campaign to support students, faculty, strategic initiatives, research and infrastructure. That’s why the campaign to raise $175 million in private support is called Destination Distinction.
