BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE/February 6, 2009
Spring Enrollment, Number of Classes Taken Up Once Again at
Boise State for Spring 2009
Boise State University posted another spring enrollment increase with a head
count of 18,963 students, a .5 percent increase over last spring. Not only
are more students enrolled, but they also are taking more classes. Students
are registered for 6,764 more credits than last spring, a 3.4 percent
increase.
“Boise State is pleased with this continued growth, which points to the
ongoing demand for higher education opportunities in the Treasure Valley,”
said Michael Laliberte, Boise State’s vice president for student affairs.
“It’s clear that the current economic climate is driving more students to
campuses across the nation, and Boise State is no exception. Our unique
location in Idaho’s capital city makes Boise State an attractive destination
for new and returning students of all ages.”
Boise State saw an increase in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment
this spring. An increase of 124 graduate students (6 percent) brings Boise
State’s graduate student population to a total of 2,203. The university
experienced an anticipated drop in Applied Technology enrollment as Boise
State prepares for the transfer of the Selland College to the College of
Western Idaho this summer. Boise State expects more than 1,000 applied
technology students to transfer to CWI this fall.
“We are pleased with the opening of CWI, which has broadened the spectrum of
opportunities for students across Southwest Idaho,” said Sona Andrews, Boise
State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. “The need for
post-secondary education in the valley is indicated by both institutions’
strong enrollment. We look forward to partnering with CWI to serve students
whose future academic endeavors include baccalaureate degrees.”
Boise State continues to have a presence in Canyon County at several sites,
including the Canyon County Center on Caldwell Boulevard and at Columbia
High School.
Enrollment numbers for new, first-time degree-seeking freshmen and transfer
students were even more impressive. Overall, that number increased 6.5
percent. New transfers are up 10.7 percent and this trend is expected to
continue with the combined efforts of Boise State University and the College
of Western Idaho in helping students to complete baccalaureate degrees. Once
again, the quality of the entering class is improving, with the average
composite ACT score increasing significantly from a 20.5 to a 21.
Other points of interest regarding Boise State’s spring enrollment include:
• A substantial 9.2 percent increase in the number of international
students, for a total of 358.
• New students are 6.5 percent more diverse than last spring, and total
enrollment is 4 percent more diverse.
• Enrollment in online courses is up 758 students, or 21.8 percent.
• The number of students on the Boise campus grew by almost 500 students.
The report comes following the 10th day of classes on which the state’s
institutions of higher education are required to report enrollment numbers
to the State Board of Education.
