Boise State Student Group Celebrates Darwin's Birth with
Lecture by James G. Coors on
Feb. 12
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, James G.
Coors, professor emeritus in the Department of Agronomy at the University of
Wisconsin, Madison, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in room 110 of the
Education Building. Admission is free, and free parking will be available in
the Brady Garage during the event.
The talk will be about Darwin’s concepts of natural selection, with lessons
learned from artificial selection. Jim Coors received his doctorate in plant
breeding and biometry at Cornell University. He has developed and released
novel corn germplasm as part of a research program that involves studies of
long-term selection and the domestication of corn.
Coors has served in a number of professional organizations, including the
board of directors for the Crop Science Society of America — he served as
president in 2005 — and the American Society of Agronomy. Coors enjoys
talking about selection, both natural and artificial, and its role in
evolutionary biology.
Boise State’s event is sponsored by the Secular Student Alliance, which is
joining institutions around the globe in marking both Darwin’s birth and the
150th anniversary of “The Origin of Species.” For more information, e-mail
