BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE/February 10, 2009
Campus-Wide Valentine's Food Drive at Boise State to Address
Growing Need in the Community
Boise State University is hosting a campus-wide food drive to help feed the
growing number of hungry families in Idaho. Members of the campus community,
as well as alumni and friends of the university, are invited to "Have a
Heart" and drop off nonperishable food items from Feb. 12-25 at any of a
number of barrel locations around campus. Donations benefit the Idaho
Foodbank, which provides food to agencies and organizations that help feed
the hungry.
People also are invited to drop off food donations at the "swing-by"
location at Capitol Village, located at Capitol Boulevard and University
Drive, on Feb. 18 and 25. Boise State employees will be manning this
drive-by location from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. both days. Sealed containers of
pet food also will be accepted at this location to help stock the Pet Food
Pantry, a joint effort by several local organizations — including the Idaho
Foodbank, Meals on Wheels and the Idaho Humane Society — to provide dog and
cat food for families and individuals in need of assistance.
"As one of the Treasure Valley's largest employers, we are in a position to
make a difference," said Boise State President Bob Kustra. "A year ago, many
would have been hard-pressed to predict the depth of this downturn in our
economy. As challenging as we may find some of the latest budget news, it is
important to look at things optimistically and recognize that there are
things we can do to make a positive impact on those struggling to feed their
families."
In addition to drop-off locations, donations are being accepted online at
www.boisestate.edu. According to the
Idaho Foodbank, a monetary donation of $10 will feed 30 people and a $50
donation will feed 150. The Web site will also provide a list of barrel
locations on campus.
