Rocky Anderson to Keynote Legislative Advocacy Days on Monday

The Idaho Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers today announced that Ross “Rocky” Anderson will be the keynote speaker at the NASW Legislative Advocacy Days 2009 on Monday.

The theme of his talk is “Take the High Road for Human Rights in Idaho and Around the World.” It will be held Monday, Feb. 16, 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Boise State University Student Union Building, Jordan Ballroom. The public is invited and admission is $5 at the door. RSVP is requested by registering online at www.naswidaho.org

Rocky Anderson was the Mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years including during the 2002 Winter Olympics and became even more widely known for his defense of the U.S. Constitution, opposition to the war in Iraq and his call for the impeachment of President George W. Bush. The popular mayor did not pursue re-election in order to work for human rights as the Executive Director of High Road for Human Rights. (www.highroadforhumanrights.org

The annual NASW Legislative Advocacy Days will feature training and an opportunity to meet with state legislators for social work students, professional social workers, and allies for social justice from every region of Idaho. In addition to Rocky Anderson’s keynote, workshops and presentations include:
  • Immigration
  • Mental Health
  • Economic Justice
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Social Work Ethics and Social Justice
  • Idaho Human Rights Act
  • Idaho Behavioral Health Redesign and the Future of Social Work Education in Idaho
  • Screening of the film, “For the Bible Tells Me So”

The two-day conference will be held from Noon to 9 p.m. on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 16 in the Boise State Student Union Jordan Ballroom with the keynote address at 5 p.m. A private dinner/reception with Rocky will be held that evening with leading Idaho human rights advocates. Tuesday, Feb. 17 will include advocacy training and a luncheon with Idaho legislators.

This year’s NASW Legislative Advocacy Days is hosted by the Boise State University School of Social Work in partnership with the Idaho Women’s Network, the Snake River Alliance, the Lewis-Clark State College Social Work Program and the ACLU Idaho Chapter.
