News Release BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / February 18, 2009 $36,000 in Scholarships Will be Awarded Feb. 28 at Boise State University's 42nd Annual Science Competition Day High school students from Idaho and Eastern Oregon will compete for plaques, medals, trophies and two $18,000 scholarships to Boise State University during Science Competition Day on Saturday, Feb. 28. Now in its 42nd year, the annual event is an academic challenge that tests students’ knowledge in biology, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, math and physics. After check-in at the Education Building, the competition begins at 9 a.m. with a 90-minute, interdisciplinary exam containing 100 multiple-choice questions written by Boise State faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. Schools are placed in divisions based on size and can win in team and individual categories, and all awards except the two scholarships are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The two top performing seniors each will be given a medal and offered an $18,000 academic scholarship ($4,500 per year for up to four years) pending his or her acceptance to Boise State. After the awards luncheon in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom, those who received a raw score greater than zero on the exam (which is penalty scored to discourage random guessing) are eligible to compete in a mousetrap catapult contest hosted by the Physics Department. The hands-on fun is just one component of a day meant to give motivated students an opportunity to meet each other and get exposed to opportunities at Boise State. “The scholarship competition is a great way to attract talented students and introduce them to the quality education available at Boise State,” said Brad Bammel, an associate chemistry professor and chair of this year’s event. The deadline for student applications and payments ($5 for the luncheon) has been extended to Friday, Feb. 20. Free event parking is available in the Brady Garage, and application forms and details about Science Competition Day are available online at http://coen.boisestate.edu/sciday. -30- Media Contact: Erin Ryan, University Communications, (208) 426-4910, erinryan@boisestate.edu Boise State University is “The New U Rising” with record student enrollment, new academic buildings, additional degree programs and a growing research agenda.
