News Release February 19, 2009 Media Advisory What: National Engineers Week Calculator Crunch When: Noon Friday, Feb. 20 Where: Engineering and Technology Building patio, Boise State University What better way to celebrate National Engineers Week than to witness the mass destruction of old, outdated and out of favor calculators? For the fourth year in a row, Boise State University’s College of Engineering will play host to the “Calculator Crunch,” which will turn the Engineering and Technology Building’s patio into a launch pad for technological flotsam at noon this Friday. Engineering students and faculty will compete in teams to see how effectively they can hurl and destroy calculators in categories including best scatter field of debris and best distance. Joining Dean Cheryl Schrader in judging the contest will be celebrity judges Russ Whitney of Microsoft Boise and Barbara Morgan, former NASA astronaut and Boise State’s distinguished educator in residence. The panel will tally scores, prizes will be awarded and free pizza will be available for participants. First place winners will receive donated Hewlett-Packard 39g+ graphing calculators. The College of Engineering is celebrating National Engineers Week through Feb. 21 to promote engineering as a profession and praise the creative contributions engineers make to improving the quality of life worldwide.
