“Pippin” is one of the most popular Broadway musicals of the past 50 years; the original production opened in 1972 and ran for 1,944 performances. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Roger O. Hirson and originally directed by noted choreographer Bob Fosse, “Pippin” is based on the story of the son of Charlemagne (known in the production as “Charles.”) Pippin tries to find his purpose in life through a series of adventures guided by a character known as The Leading Player. Through war, revolution, religion and love, Pippin searches for meaning — only to find that his purpose may not be as grand as he thought.

Well-known Boise actors Richard Klautsch (who is also chair of the Department of Theatre Arts) and Carol Whiteleather are guest artists in this production, which is directed by professor Gordon Reinhart. A spare stage, memorable songs, lighting by Idaho Dance Theatre’s Fred Hansen and performances by students and alumni from the departments of Theatre Arts and Music all add to the drama of this sweeping story. Marla Hansen, co-director of Idaho Dance Theatre, directs the dancers, many of whom are involved in IDT. The extensive ensemble cast is joined by the main characters, played by Kaelen O’Shea as the Leading Player, Brian Roundy as Pippin, Klautsch as Charles, Declan Kempe as Lewis, Misty Taylor as Fastrada, Whiteleather as Berthe, Dominique Nelson as Catherine and Connor Schow as Theo.
