A team of Boise State University construction management students placed
third in the Risk Management problem category at the Associated Schools of
Construction (ASC) Inter-Scholastic Regional Competition and Conference held
Feb. 11-14 in Reno, Nev.
This year marked the 22nd consecutive running of the largest construction
competition for college students in the world. More than 950 competitors
participated on 160 teams from 37 universities and 16 states. Boise State
entered teams in eight divisions (Heavy Civil, Design Build, Commercial,
Residential, Marine, Preconstruction, LEED and Risk Management), competing
against top schools such as Arizona State University, Colorado State
University, Brigham Young University, University of Washington, Oregon State
University, Cal Poly, UC Berkeley and Virginia Tech.
Risk Management was a new problem category this year, and industry-sponsored
mock-ups based on actual multimillion-dollar construction projects prompted
the teams to produce written proposals, oral presentations and exhibits
judged by professional constructors.
“Each problem was judged on how teams balanced profit, schedule and client
relations,” said Rebecca Mirsky, one of Boise State’s faculty coaches and
chair of the Construction Management Department in the College of
Engineering.
Boise State’s student captain Tim Beardmore credited faculty coach Wendy
Wendrowski with helping the team become knowledgeable about contracts and
their construction applications. He also praised teammates Nick Graham, Jeff
McDougall, Kevin Tucker, Marty Taylor and Ami Tracy for their pragmatism and
hard work.
“This achievement would not have happened without successful teamwork and
wonderful coaching,” Beardmore said, adding that the distinction is just one
benefit of attending an ASC competition. “The best part of the Reno
competition is the knowledge one takes back from it.”
