EXHIBITIONS:
March 2-20 “Beautiful Terrible: New Work by Amanda Hamilton.” Visual Arts Center Gallery 2. Opening reception is 6-8 p.m. March 6. The reception is free, and free parking will be available during the reception in the lot between the Liberal Arts Building and the Special Events Center. Amanda Hamilton is an assistant professor of drawing and painting at Northwest Nazarene University. Her new photographs and video reference the phenomena of the disappearance of White Lake in Bolotnikovo, Russia, in May 2005. “A Man, When He is a Man.” Student Union Barnwell Room. Noon. This documentary, highlighted with a touch of dark humor, portrays the social climate and cultural traditions of women in Costa Rica. Fettuccine Forum: “Women in Caricature: The Politics of Stereotyping.” Rose Room, downtown Boise. 5:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Featuring Sandra Schackel, professor of history at Boise State University. Free. For more information, call 426-3701.

Thursday, March 5-Sunday, March 8
“Pippin.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. March 5-7, 10 a.m. March 6 and 2 p.m. March 8 “Pippin” is one of the most popular Broadway musicals of the past 50 years. Based on the story of the son of Charlemagne, it features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. $18 for general admission, $15 for students, Boise State alumni and seniors. Tickets for groups of ten or more are $12 each. Friday, March 6
MFA Reading Series: Poets Maxine Chernoff and Paul Hoover. Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. 7:30-9 p.m. Free and open to the public, the MFA Reading Series brings nationally renowned authors and poets to the Boise State campus. Past speakers include Rick Bass, Chris Offutt, Rae Armentrout, Alice Notley, Michael Palmer, Joy Williams, Anthony Doerr, Denis Johnson, Richard Bausch and Nathaniel Mackey. International Food, Song and Dance Festival. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6 p.m. International students have planned an exciting evening beginning with a buffet-style dinner with dishes from around the world, followed by dessert. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices are available. After-dinner international entertainment includes a flag parade and fashion show from Boise State’s current international students. Individual tickets for the festival are available at Select-a-Seat outlets and cost $16 for adults, $12 for students with ID and children ages 6-18. Tickets at the door are an additional $3. “Best of Field” Workshop. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 4-5 p.m. This workshop, tied to the “Lessons from Alumni” sessions, helps students become “Best of Field” when meeting with employers. Free. “State of Fear.” Student Union Hatch C Ballroom. 7 p.m. This documentary highlights the human and societal costs faced in a war against terror. Part of the Latin American Film Series, presented by Dora Ramirez-Dhoore. Free. For more information, call 426-5950.

“Yogassage.” Student Recreation Center Classroom. 6-8:30 p.m. This course teaches gentle and restorative yoga postures combined with therapeutic massage to relieve tension as well as detoxify muscle tissue and internal organs. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and anticipate class discussion, yoga and self-massage participation. $15 Rec Center members, $20 non-members. Massacre Rocks Climbing Adventure. Meet at Outdoor Programs Office. Registration ends March 11. For those who crave outdoor climbing in the winter, this trip to Idaho’s premier basalt crags offers a desert respite from the cold of winter. Cost is $105. Women’s Leadership Conference. Student Union Lookout Room. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration ends March 6. The goal of the conference is to develop the leadership potential of women on campus by connecting women students to other women leaders and learning new leadership skills. Dirty Devil River Backpacking. Meet at Outdoor Programs Office. Registration ends March 11 for the March 21 trip and March 18 for the March 29 trip. Amazing canyon views, a flowing river with springs, slot canyons, pictographs, natural arches and abandoned homesteads make this backpacking trip one of the best in the area. Cost is $399. Cleft Caves Adventure. Meet at Outdoor Programs Office. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration ends March 27. Pre-trip meeting at 7 p.m. Idaho is filled with underground adventure opportunities. Included in the cleft formation is Smith’s Crack Cave, which is considered a fissure cave and offers a variety of exploration opportunities. This is a great chance to get out your flashlight and explore the caverns of Idaho. $35. Saturday, April 4-Sunday, April 5
Snake River Backpacking. Meet at Outdoor Programs Office. Registration ends March 27. Pre-trip meeting at 7 p.m. April 1. The Birds of Prey area is the perfect place for a spring backpacking trip because the area offers warm days, lots of wildlife and a rich interpretive history. The trip will travel along the Snake River and Bonneville flood plain boulders to see remnants of mining homesteads, old placer claims and tall basalt cliffs. $70. Saturday, April 11-Sunday, April 12
Birds of Prey/Snake River Canoe. Meet at Outdoor Programs Office. Registration ends 7 p.m. April 4. Pre-trip meeting at 7 p.m. April 8. Spend one night camping on the river and float from Black Butte to Swan Falls Dam. This stretch is suitable for canoeing and is a great place to check out the natural history and beauty associated with the Snake River. Additionally, the raptors in this area include everything from golden eagles and kestrels to northern harriers. $75.
