More than 300 students involved in the Boise State University TRIO Pre-College programs will spend their day tomorrow learning about the importance of helping their communities before heading out and tackling service projects around the valley. The effort is part of the 2009 TRIO National Day of Service.

Students from Parma, Wilder, Homedale, Nampa, Caldwell, Boise, Melba, Meridian, Horseshoe Bend, Duck Valley and Idaho City will be at the Stueckle Sky Center at Bronco Stadium at 9 a.m. to have breakfast and listen to guest speakers Ray Serrano and Ramon Silva. At 10:30 a.m., the students will disperse to service sites and work until 1:30 p.m. Service projects include painting a band shell in Nampa, working with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at the Boise Rescue Mission, participating in a kid’s fair, and more.

The TRIO National Day of Service is a way for students to show appreciation to their communities for their support. The TRIO Pre-College programs were established by Congress in 1965 to provide education opportunities for low-income students. Boise State is home to a number of TRIO programs, including Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, the TRIO Dissemination Partnership, Student Success Service, the College Assistance Migrant Program, the High School Equivalency Program and Multicultural Educational Opportunity.
