BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE/April 1, 2008

Boise State Student Chosen for Competitive Internship in Germany

Buffy Jones, an undergraduate major in German and communication with a journalism emphasis at Boise State University, has been chosen for a highly competitive paid summer internship in Germany for American journalism students. Jones is a 1985 graduate of Boise High School and a former reporter for NPR News 91. A maximum of 20 students were selected from across the United States.

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) InternXchange program runs from June 9-Aug. 22 and consists of two complementary segments. The first seven weeks will be spent at the Freie Universität Berlin where participants will study the politics, society and culture of Germany. Students will then work for a week on a project with journalism students from independent states of the former Soviet Union. The final four weeks will be spent on an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine or radio station.

The Freie Universität Berlin was named in 2007 as one of the nine “universities of excellence” in Germany. The purpose of the program is to allow American students to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary global politics. In order to apply, students needed a background in journalism and a good grasp of the German language, history, society and culture.

Jones is a member of the Boise State Honors College and Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She previously studied in Germany through a Gilman International Studies Abroad grant.
