Boise State Criminal Justice Department Offers Victims' Rights Week Workshops April 27-30

Boise State University’s Department of Criminal Justice will offer 48 hours of workshops over four days for students and the public to learn about the history of the victims’ rights movement, services for crime victims and the effects of crime on its victims.

Hosted during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the workshops will be presented by faculty members from Boise State, Idaho State University and University of Idaho, Boise State student affairs professionals and professionals from the community. Running from April 27-30, the panels will be held in various rooms in the Boise State Student Union Building. The sessions are free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the Lincoln Garage.

Lisa Bostaph, professor of criminal justice at Boise State and coordinator of the workshops is particularly pleased with the evening events.

“We have a series of great panels and events set up in the evening, giving those who cannot attend during the day an opportunity to take part in some quality events,” Bostaph said.

Here’s a rundown of the week’s evening events:

• Monday, April 27, 6-8 p.m., SUB Hatch Ballroom B – Showing of the documentary “Until the Violence Stops,” which shows the anti-violence work that has been done around the world using funds raised from productions of “The Vagina Monologues.”
• Tuesday, April 28, 6-8 p.m., SUB Grand Ballroom C – The Idaho Victim-Witness Association (IVWA) sponsors a scenario demonstration of best practices in domestic violence response by law enforcement.
• Wednesday, April 29, 6-8p.m., SUB Hatch Ballroom B – IVWA sponsors a crime victims panel where three victims speak about their experiences (victimization, criminal justice response, and recovery).
• Thursday April 30, 6:30-8 p.m., SUB Barnwell Room –Becky Boone of the Associated Press, Betsy Russell of the Spokesman-Review, and Alyson Outen of KTVB-TV will discuss their experiences covering the trial of Joseph Duncan, including listening to and viewing disturbing evidence during the trial and their decision-making process about what information should be made public through their reporting.
