Boise State Capital Scholars on Tuesday

What: Boise State awards $1,000 scholarships to Idaho high school juniors
When: Tuesday, April 14, Opening program at 1:30 p.m. followed by other activities until 7:30 p.m.
Where: Student Union Building Jordan D Ballroom

About 75 Idaho high school juniors are expected to participate in Tuesday’s Boise State Capital Scholars program at the Student Union Building. They are eligible to receive $1,000 renewable scholarships for up to five years when they Boise State University as full-time college students. The scholarship program is funded through sales proceeds from the Boise State Bookstore.

Selection is based on college entrance examination scores and class rankings. Honorees, along with their parents or guardians, have been invited to campus for tours, discussions with academic deans, demonstrations highlighting research and teaching, and an awards dinner. Here’s the agenda:

• 1:30 p.m.--Welcome from Craig Hemmens, director of Honors College, and Michael Laliberte, vice president for student affairs
• 2 p.m.--Teaching demonstrations with professors Eric Landrum (psychology), Michelle Sabick (engineering), Anika Smulovitz (art) and Henry Charlier (chemistry)
• 3 p.m.--Tours of campus featuring Albertsons Library, Honors College, campus housing and the Interactive Learning Center
• 5 p.m.--Academic reception
• 5:45 p.m.--Awards banquet with keynote speaker

This is the fifth year for the Boise State Capital Scholars academic achievement program. A total of 212 students previously have participated in the program. Recipients have come from all parts of the Treasure Valley and the state. Honorees must score in the top 10 percent of the ACT, SAT or PSAT, rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class and attend Tuesday’s program to receive a scholarship.
