This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of

Graduation Celebration Breakfast/Spring Commencement. See May 17 for

EXHIBITIONS:
May 30-June 26. 29th Annual Idaho Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition.
Reception from 6-7:30 p.m. June 6. Student Union Gallery. Free parking
available in the Library Lot for reception. This exhibition highlights
selected watercolor paintings from member artists around the state of Idaho.

Sunday, May 10-12
Clay and Fire Sale. Visual Arts Center Galleries 1 and 2. 10 a.m-5
p.m. Featuring ceramics created by Boise State students, professors and
alumni, this sale features creative works in a variety of styles ¬¬–– just
in time for Mother’s Day gifts. Proceeds benefit the Visiting Artists in
Ceramics program. Admission is free. For more information on the sale, call

“Definitely, Maybe.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. A man in the midst
of a divorce finds himself explaining to his daughter his past love life.
Her questions spark feelings that just might reunite him with a past or
present love. Rated PG-13. For more information, call 426-3701.
Saturday, May 17
Graduation Celebration Breakfast. Taco Bell Arena, outside entrance
#3. 8-9:30 a.m. The Celebration features free breakfast, music and a last
chance prep station. Graduates and their families are encouraged to stop by
before the ceremony. For information call the Boise State Alumni Association
at 426-1698.
Spring Commencement. Taco Bell Arena. 10 a.m. This event will bring
the university together for a traditional ceremony including the
processional and recessional of candidates, individual recognition of each
person and hooding of the doctoral candidates. Astronaut and teacher Barbara
Morgan will receive an honorary Ph.D. Morgan also will be the featured
speaker for the ceremony. Morgan participated in the Teacher in Space
program as the backup to Christa McAuliffe for the ill-fated mission of
Space Shuttle Challenger. She later trained as a mission specialist for
NASA. Boise State will broadcast the ceremony live on the Web for those
individuals who cannot attend in person.

Monday, May 19-22
Idaho Conference on Alcohol and Drug Dependency. Student Union. The
conference provides training for substance abuse and dependence
professionals and educators in behavioral health care, criminal justice and
recovery support. For more information, visit

May 21-25. Cirque du Soleil’s “Saltimbanco.” Taco Bell Arena. After
traveling the world and playing in more then 74 cities on five continents
since its conception in 1992, “Saltimbanco” returns to North America.
“Saltimbanco” is embarking on a tour of more than 40 arenas across Canada

Coach Chris Petersen Lecture. Bronco Football Complex on the south
side of Bronco Stadium. 7 p.m. The special lecture is the final event of the
spring season for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Boise State.
Those interested should call 426-1709 to reserve a seat. Free parking also
will be provided. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a
membership-based program for the adult community. Petersen’s lecture is free

“New and Improved.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Also May 24
and June 2. Featuring choreography and performances by Kelli Brown, Katie
Ponozzo, Jaime Moore, Amanda Watson, Leslie Thompson, Teresa Vaughn, Echo
Waldron, Brecca Olsen, Ben Davis and many others. Performances and original

Michael Feldman’s “Whad’ya Know?” Morrison Center. 8 p.m. “Whad’ya
Know?” is a comedy, interview and quiz radio show created by host Michael

Memorial Day. University closed.
June and July. Desert Studies Institute. This institute is a
cooperative venture between Boise State University and Celebration Park,
offering a broad range of academic programs of interest and value to
students, teachers and the public. Workshops focus on the prehistory,
history, ecology and politics of Idaho’s desert environments, and of deserts
worldwide. All workshops are scheduled in two day time blocks and are held
on the Boise State campus, in the field or a combination of both. For a

Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Club Night. 5:30-late. Jazz in June
features Club Night in downtown Boise. Club Night features many local and
Jazz Camp artists competing for a chance to win the opening spot for
legendary drummer Roy Haynes and the “Birds of a Feather” project. Club
Night will take place in various locations in downtown Boise. For more

Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Roy Haynes and the “Birds of a Feather”

Saturday, June 21
Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Band Shell Concerts. Gene Harris Band
Shell. 11 a.m.-2 p.m., gospel concert at 2 p.m. The concerts will feature
Gene Harris Jazz Competition bands, local artists, Jazz Camp students and
Cherie Buckner with the Celebration Choir in a gospel concert. Free. For

June, July, August Summer Camps. Boise State University offers a wide
range of summer camps to meet just about any interest. Camps are geared for
ages 5-high school and range from academics, music and dance to sports and

Donaldo Macedo Workshop. Student Union Lookout Room. 5-8 p.m. each
day. University of Massachusetts professor Donaldo Macedo will teach a
special topics class. Macedo’s workshop is titled “The Hegemony of English
or Critical Citizenship” and will address bilingual/English as a Second
Language outcomes. He will present arguments in favor of the promotion of
equitable education experiences for all learners, and participants will be
invited to engage in critical conversations. For more information on the
