This Week at Boise State

Editor’s Note: Due to the end of the academic year, “This Week at Boise State” will take a hiatus, returning in August.

EXHIBITIONS:
May 30-June 26
29th Annual Idaho Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition. Reception from 6-7:30 p.m. June 6. Student Union Gallery. Free parking available in the Library Lot for reception. This exhibition highlights selected watercolor paintings from member artists around the state of Idaho. For more information, call 426-4636.

Monday, May 19-22
Idaho Conference on Alcohol and Drug Dependency. Student Union. The conference provides training for substance abuse and dependence professionals and educators in behavioral health care, criminal justice and recovery support. For more information, visit www.attendicadd.com. 

Wednesday, May 21
Coach Chris Petersen Lecture. Bronco Football Complex on the south side of Bronco Stadium. 7 p.m. The special lecture is the final event of the spring season for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Boise State. Those interested should call 426-1709 to reserve a seat. Free parking also will be provided. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a membership-based program for the adult community. May 21-25
Cirque du Soleil’s “Saltimbanco.” Taco Bell Arena. After traveling the world and playing in more then 74 cities on five continents since its conception in 1992, “Saltimbanco” returns to North America. “Saltimbanco” is embarking on a tour of more than 40 arenas across Canada and the United States. Friday, May 23
“New and Improved.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Also May 24 and June 2. Featuring choreography and performances by Kelli Brown, Katie Ponozzo, Jaime Moore, Amanda Watson, Leslie Thompson, Teresa Vaughn, Echo Waldron, Brecca Olsen, Ben Davis and many others. Michael Feldman’s “Whad’ya Know?” Morrison Center. 8 p.m. “Whad’ya Know?” is a comedy, interview and quiz radio show created by host Michael Feldman, heard every week on National Public Radio. $27-$62 by calling 426-1110, all Select-a-Seat outlets, the Morrison Center box office or www.idahotickets.com.

“Stomp.” Morrison Center. 8 p.m. May 30, 31; 4 p.m. May 31; 2 p.m. June 1. June and July
Desert Studies Institute. This institute is a cooperative venture between Boise State University and Celebration Park, offering a broad range of academic programs of interest and value to students, teachers and the public. Workshops focus on the prehistory, history, ecology and politics of Idaho’s desert environments, and of deserts worldwide. All workshops are scheduled in two day time blocks and are held on the Boise State campus, in the field or a combination of both. Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Club Night. 5:30 p.m.-late. Jazz in June features Club Night in downtown Boise. Club Night features many local and Jazz Camp artists competing for a chance to win the opening spot for legendary drummer Roy Haynes and the “Birds of a Feather” project. Annual Civil Liberties Symposium. Minidoka Internment National Monument. A two-day symposium looking at civil liberties. See www.nps.gov/miin for details.

Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Roy Haynes and the “Birds of a Feather” project. Saturday, June 21
Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Band Shell Concerts. Gene Harris Band Shell. 11 a.m.-2 p.m., gospel concert at 2 p.m. The concerts will feature Gene Harris Jazz Competition bands, local artists, Jazz Camp students and Cherie Buckner with the Celebration Choir in a gospel concert. June, July, August
Summer Camps. Boise State University offers a wide range of summer camps to meet just about any interest. Camps are geared for ages 5-high school and range from academics, music and dance to sports and outdoor adventure. Registration dates vary, so be sure to check individual listings closely. Donaldo Macedo Workshop. Student Union Lookout Room. 5-8 p.m. each day. University of Massachusetts professor Donaldo Macedo will teach a special topics class. Macedo’s workshop is titled “The Hegemony of English or Critical Citizenship” and will address bilingual/English as a second language outcomes. He will present arguments in favor of the promotion of equitable education experiences for all learners, and participants will be invited to engage in critical conversations.
