Gene Harris Jazz Festival to Host Legendary Drummer Roy Haynes, Bandshell Concerts and More During Jazz in June

Jazz in June, the final event of Boise State University’s Gene Harris Jazz Festival, will kick off June 19 with Club Night. Jazz in June will wrap up with a gospel concert on June 21.

Jazz in June comes on the heels of the Gene Harris Endowment Night in November, which raised money for the jazz pianist’s endowment at Boise State, and the Jazz Bash in April, which featured workshops for students from around the state.

Tickets for this year’s Jazz in June festivities are $30 general, $10 students for Club Night; and $25-$80 general, $15 students for the Roy Haynes concert. The Gene Harris Bandshell concerts and the gospel concert are free.

- Club Night: 5:30-late, June 19, downtown Boise. Featuring a lineup of local and national musicians playing at the Big Easy, Berryhill & Co., Satchel’s Grill, Gusto, the Gamekeeper, TableRock Brew Pub and Grill and more. Check http://geneharris.org close to the event date for lineups.

New this year is the Gene Harris Jazz Competition, which will allow concert goers to vote for talented up-and-coming artists who will play at the bandshell concert on June 20. Bands from New York, Kansas, Iowa, California and Washington will join local artists in this competition. Preliminary rounds will be held 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. June 18 and 10 a.m. June 19 in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. The finals will be held at the Big Easy during Club Night on June 19.

- Roy Haynes Concert: 8 p.m. June 20, Morrison Center. Legendary drummer Roy Haynes began his professional career in 1945, and his career has included appearances with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and many others. He was inducted into the Down Beat Magazine Hall of Fame in 2004. Haynes will play with the Birds of a Feather Project during the concert.

- Gene Harris Bandshell Concerts: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 20 and 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June 21. The bandshell concerts will be held at the Gene Harris Bandshell in Julia Davis Park and will feature the winner of the Gene Harris Jazz Competition and local musicians. Other performers include vocalist Gail Pettis, who will perform in an enhanced concert setting for those with impairments and disabilities at 2:30 p.m. June 21. This performance will have added accessibility for those with hearing and visual impairments, including an America Sign Language interpreter, and audio describer and a graphic artist who will depict the music in paint as it is performed in real time.

Cherie Buckner and the Celebration Choir will present a gospel concert at 1 p.m. June 21. Other featured performers include the Jazz Competition participants, the Gene Harris All Stars and bands that participated in the Gene Harris Jazz Camp.

The concerts are held in cooperation with Idaho Parents Unlimited, the Susan G. Komen — Boise Race for the Cure and the Idaho FoodBank. The Idaho FoodBank will have drop-off sites at all Club Night venues, the Morrison Center and the Bandshell Concerts.
