BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / June 12, 2008

Enrollment Up Nearly 10 Percent in Boise State University Summer Sessions

Enrollment in Boise State University’s summer programs is up nearly 10 percent — or about 500 students — over last summer. The first three-week session began on May 19, followed by the start of five-, eight- and ten-week sessions this week. Enrollment in those classes is tracking 8.7 percent to 9.7 percent ahead of last year. A total of 6,159 students have enrolled as of this week.

An increasing number of students have enrolled in core and upper-division undergraduate classes, particularly in the sciences, according to Linda Urquidi, summer school director. As classes fill, Boise State has added new sections to accommodate more students.

Students appear to be using summer classes to help them graduate earlier or to get pre-requisites out of the way before fall semester begins, Urquidi said. Full-time students can more easily graduate in four years by adding one class each summer.

More than 450 courses and workshops are offered in the summer, including core, upper-division, graduate and internet-based classes, as well as a number of short workshops. Another round of summer classes will begin on July 14, and enrollment for those sessions is still open.

Benefits of enrollment in the summer program include small classes, reduced per-credit fees and a relaxed atmosphere. Picking up one or two classes in the summer could save a student thousands of dollars if it helps shorten completion of his or her degree by even a semester.

“People like the change of pace offered in the summer sessions,” said Mark Wheeler, dean of Extended Studies. “Students can make progress toward their academic goals, but because the sessions tend to be shorter they can still enjoy other summer activities.”

Currently enrolled Boise State students can register for summer classes on BroncoWeb. Others should check their access on BroncoWeb before reapplying for admission.
