EVENT NEWS / July 2, 2008 Education Scholar Donaldo Macedo to Give Lecture, Teach Class at Boise State University University of Massachusetts professor Donaldo Macedo will give a free lecture and teach a special topics class at Boise State University the week of July 21. Macedo’s free keynote address will be at 5 p.m. July 21 in the Student Union Lookout Room, located on the second floor. Macedo will sign books following his lecture, “The Hegemony of English or Critical Citizenship.” A special poster, created in his honor, also will be unveiled after the lecture. Macedo will also teach a for-credit class on critical citizenship and language-related issues from 5-8 p.m. July 21-25; the free lecture is included in the workshop. Macedo’s workshop will address bilingual/English as a Second Language outcomes. He will present arguments in favor of the promotion of equitable education experiences for all learners, and participants will be invited to engage in critical conversations. Macedo is the graduate program director of the applied linguistics master of arts program at UMass and is a distinguished professor of liberal arts and education. Macedo worked extensively with Paulo Freire, one of the most influential educational thinkers of the 20th century. He has published extensively in the areas of linguistics, critical literacy and bilingual and multicultural education.
