News Release DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE / August 8, 2008 Boise State Engineering Students Eligible for New Scholarships During Fall Semester In time for the new school year, Boise State University was just awarded a $593,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for scholarships for freshman level students majoring in engineering or computer science. For the current academic year 2008-2009, the College of Engineering expects to award 10 to 15 renewable scholarships of up to $5,000 each for students registered for coming fall semester. Students living in the Engineering Residential College may qualify for higher awards. Applicants must demonstrate financial need in order to qualify for the scholarships and will then be selected based on academic merit. Incoming full-time freshmen majoring in computer science, undecided engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, civil engineering or electrical engineering are eligible to apply. Current Boise State students who are beginning freshman-level coursework in engineering and computer science are also welcome to apply. The deadline for applying is August 18. Tanya Lalicker, a senior in electrical and computer engineering, says being an NSF Scholar has let her focus on her studies and aspirations to be an electrical and computer engineer. “The financial support made it possible for me to leave my second job of waitressing and center my attention on the nano-photonics research work which I perform for Dr. Wan Kuang,” Lalicker said. “The scholarship also allowed me more time to take leadership positions such as being the president of the Society of Women Engineers and the vice president of the Engineering Honor Society. I’m extremely grateful to be an NSF Scholar.” This is the third major scholarship program the College of Engineering has been awarded by the NSF in the past five years, with the awards totaling nearly $1.4 million. The NSF Scholarships have been essential in recruiting and retaining capable engineering students. As a result, the college has seen a 33 percent increase in engineering undergraduate enrollment over the past three years. “It would be hard to overstate the positive impact of the NSF scholarship programs on the students in the College of Engineering at Boise State University,” said Janet Callahan, associate dean of the College of Engineering and the leader of the engineering scholarship committee. “NSF scholarships have helped establish a culture of academic excellence and undergraduate research in the College of Engineering, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.” With an extensive support network of special classes, student leadership opportunities, and academic support, most of the 133 Boise State NSF Scholars to date are achieving academic success. Students are eligible to apply immediately, they will receive a scholarship starting in the 2008-2009 academic year, and they must meet these requirements: • Complete the NSF Scholarship application form on the
