The Idaho Charter School Network is part of Boise State University’s Center for School Improvement and Policy Studies. The contest, which was presented in cooperation with the Idaho State Library Commission, was open to charter school students in the 6th-9th grades. The students were invited to participate by sending in a book mark design inspired by the phrase, “Libraries and Charter Schools Opening Doors to …” Entries were received from a number of charter schools throughout the state and were judged for composition, use of color and execution of the theme. Judges included Melissa McGrath, information officer for Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna; Heather Bauer, graphic designer for the Balance Business; Shirley Rau of the Office of School Choice and Innovation at the State Department of Education; Peggy McClendon of the Idaho Commission for Libraries and Kelli Burnham, a Boise State marketing student. She received her awards, including the savings bond presented by Paula Brown of CTB/McGraw Hill, while accompanied by her parents, Carolyn and Fred Nitz; Falcon Ridge principal Julie Vermillion and art teacher Tammy Peterson. More than 5,000 bookmarks bearing Nitz’s design have been distributed to libraries statewide to help spread the word about charter schools in Idaho, underscore the value of summer reading and showcase charter school student creativity.
