'Chicago 10' Kicks Off Fifth Season of the Diverse Perspectives Series at Boise State University

The fifth season of the Diverse Perspectives Film Series at Boise State University kicks off with a screening of the film “Chicago 10” from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Student Union Farnsworth Room. An additional screening will be held from 10:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 20 in Room 102E of Boise State West. Both screenings are free and open to the public and are presented by Boise State’s Cultural Center and the Independent Television Service.

“Chicago 10” juxtaposes scenes of the 1968 Democratic convention and the trial of the Vietnam War opponents — later known as the “Chicago Seven” — who protested there. Mixing animation with archival footage, Academy Award-nominated director Brett Morgan explores the events that led to the arrest of eight of the most vocal activists, including Black Panther leader Bobby Seale, who insisted on representing himself and ended up bound and gagged by an exasperated Judge Julius Hoffman; defense attorney William Kuntsler; Students for a Democratic Society defendant Tom Hayden; and Yippies Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, who served as court jesters.

Although the protesters were known as the Chicago Seven, Rubin once said, “Anyone who calls us the Chicago Seven is racist. You need to call us the Chicago Eight. But really, you should call us the Chicago 10, since our lawyers were each given contempt sentences.”

Following the film in Boise, defense attorney Tom McCabe will speak and lead an audience discussion about free speech, civil rights then and now, and other issues raised in the film. McCabe is a founding president of the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a past member of the board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho. In 1968, at the time of the Chicago convention, McCabe was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He later served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart.
