Memorial Service for Boise State Professor Mary Ellen Ryder
Set for Sept. 6 at Student Union Building
A public memorial service for Boise State University associate professor
Mary Ellen Ryder has been set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the
Jordan Ballroom of the Student Union Building on the main campus. The street
address is 1700 University Drive. The Jordan Ballroom is located on the
second floor. Free public parking is available in the Lincoln Garage south
of the SUB.
The event will honor Ryder, 56, who tragically died in the fire that swept
through a Southeast Boise neighborhood on the night of Aug. 25. She taught
linguistics for 20 years in the Department of English at Boise State. Her
research interests included historical English word formation and
stylistics, and she published a book on English noun-noun compounds. She
often traveled to Great Britain to give university presentations and was
believed to be one of the only linguists in Idaho who specialized in
psycholinguistics. She is survived by her husband, Peter.
A moment of silence in memory of Ryder and all the fire victims will also be
held at Bronco Stadium this Saturday night prior to the kickoff of the Boise
State football game.
“She is one of the great professors that built this university,” said Boise
State President Bob Kustra. “As a teacher, she has spread the joy of
learning and discovery to countless students. She will be missed as a vital
member of our campus community.”
A student scholarship fund has been established in the name of Mary Ellen
Ryder. Contributions can be made through the Boise State University
Foundation at 2225 University Drive (Capitol Village) or by calling (208)
426-3276.
