Boise State Service-Learning Program Gets $50,000 Federal Learn and Serve Grant

Boise State University’s Service-Learning program has been awarded a $50,000 federal Learn and Serve grant through Washington Campus Compact, an affiliate state office of Campus Compact, a national organization comprised of more than 1,100 higher education institutions committed to the civic and public purposes of higher education.

Funds will be used to build partnerships between faculty, students and refugee resettlement organizations; for new, multi-media resources for faculty using Service-Learning; and to facilitate promotion of Service-Learning on campus and statewide.

Just 10 years old, Boise State’s Service-Learning program is the largest in the state and is being used as a model to establish and grow similar programs at other universities. In more than 60 classes this semester, Boise State faculty are integrating Service-Learning into their courses, making community involvement an essential part of the curriculum. Service-Learning is offered in 31 departments, from art to engineering, and in every college at Boise State. It is designed to foster active citizenship and enhance learning through academically based community service.

Since fall 2000, more than 10,000 students have contributed more than 235,000 hours of service to the Treasure Valley through Boise State’s Service-Learning program. This includes a record number of students who participated during the past academic year.
