Boise State University Announces Fall MFA Reading Series
Lineup, Including Appearance by Author Denis Johnson
Boise State University’s fall MFA Reading Series will begin Sept. 19 with
poet Stephanie Strickland and will finish the season Nov. 7. This fall’s
series includes a special appearance by “Tree of Smoke” author and National
Book Award winner Denis Johnson on Sept. 30. The MFA Reading Series is
presented by the Department of English and is free and open to the public,
with the exception of the Johnson reading.
• Poet Stephanie Strickland. 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 19, Student Union Bishop
Barnwell Room. Strickland is the author of five books of poetry, including
“Zone: Zero,” which was published this year by Boise State’s Ahsahta Press.
Two of her books have on Di Castagnola Prizes from the Poetry Society of
America, and one was selected for the Brittingham Prize. She is a director
of the Electronic Literature Organization and is currently teaching at the
University of Utah.
• Fiction writer Denis Johnson. 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 30, the Knitting Factory.
$15 general, $5 students with ID. Proceeds will benefit the Court Appointed
Special Advocate Program, which matches volunteers with children who are
abused, neglected or abandoned, the majority of whom are younger than 6.
Johnson is the highly acclaimed author of three books of poetry and seven
works of fiction, including the classic “Jesus’ Son,” which was made into a
feature film of the same name. His most recent book, “Tree of Smoke,” was
the winner of the National Book Award.
• Poet Renee Gladman. 7:30-9 p.m. Oct. 10, Student Union Farnsworth Room.
• Fiction writer Pamela Johnston. 7:30-9 p.m. Oct. 25, Student Union Lookout
Room.
• Poet Kay Lederer, 7:30-9 p.m. Nov. 4, Student Union Farnsworth Room.
• Poet Tom Raworth, 7:30-9 p.m. Nov. 7, Student Union Jordan C Ballroom.
Free and open to the public, the Boise State MFA Reading Series brings
nationally recognized authors and poets to the Boise State campus and
surrounding areas. Past speakers include Rick Bass, Chris Offutt, Rae
Armantrout, Cole Swensen, Michael Palmer, Joy Williams, Anthony Doerr,
Richard Bausch and Nathaniel Mackey. Recent works by the author will be
available for purchase through the Boise State Bookstore at each reading.
