Great Basin, Gene Harris Jazz Camps Merge into One Organization Based at Boise State University

The Great Basin Jazz Camp and the Gene Harris Jazz Camp are merging both summer camps into one organization, the Gene Harris-Great Basin Jazz Camp.

As part of the merger, the annual Gene Harris Jazz Camp will move from June to July; the 2009 dates are July 13-17. The Great Basin Jazz Camp will move from Northwest Nazarene University to Boise State University.

Great Basin Jazz Camp executive director Mike Allen and Gene Harris Jazz Camp executive producer Brad Peters said the new collaboration is a win-win for both organizations.

“This arrangement with the Gene Harris Jazz Camp provides us an opportunity for larger facilities in which to teach jazz essentials to a larger junior, middle and high school student population,” Allen said. “Coupled with Boise State’s standing as one of the great universities in the Northwest, it allows us to move forward. It’s a win for Boise State University, both organizations and future jazz students in Idaho and across the Northwest United States.”

Peters said, “We are delighted to join the Great Basin Jazz Camp in our common goal of premier summer jazz education. Our objectives are essentially the same; it was only natural we combine talents and resources and work together.”

In addition to the new 2009 camp dates, a majority of last year’s Great Basin Jazz Camp faculty, including trumpeter Carl Saunders, as well as faculty from the Gene Harris Jazz Camp, will merge. Peters will be the executive director of the combined venture, while Allen will be the artistic and camp directors.
