Winners of the New York Nightlife Award for outstanding jazz combo
performance, Allen and Cohn’s music reflects the ultimate in swing and
exudes their affection for classic jazz. Like an old master, Allen’s
full-throated tenor sound creates a feel of bygone songs and styles while
Cohn proves himself to be one of today’s most creative guitarists. Bucky
Pizzarelli has called Allen’s playing “nothing less than perfect,” while
Gene Lees says that it is “sheer excellence.”
A special, free Boise Community Jazz Symposium with the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn
Classical Jazz Quartet will be held from 4-5 p.m. before the performance.
This “informance” will feature music, conversation and the interchange of
ideas in a convivial atmosphere. It’s a chance for listeners to meet, hear
and interact with these master jazz artists and gain insight into their
music as well as a deeper understanding of jazz.
The Boise Jazz Society will continue its season on Feb. 22 with Elaine Elias
and will end with Anat Cohen on May 16. The Boise Jazz Society, now in its
second year, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of live
jazz of the highest caliber. It is a partnership between the Boise community
and Boise State University whose mission and goals are dedicated to raising
awareness of jazz as art music, promoting live jazz performance, presenting
a jazz subscription series of concerts in an intimate, jazz-club
environment, enhancing educational opportunities through a series of
lectures, workshops and residences; and providing information to the
community on local and regional jazz activities and developments in the
world of jazz.
