The Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Classic Jazz Quartet. Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy Lobby, 516 S. 9th St., Boise. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. concert begins at 7 p.m. Winners of the New York Nightlife Award for outstanding jazz combo performance, Allen and Cohn’s music reflects the ultimate in swing and exudes their affection for classic jazz. A special, free Boise Community Jazz Symposium with the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Classical Jazz Quartet will be held from 4-5 p.m. before the performance. It’s a chance for listeners to meet, hear and interact with these master jazz artists. Grocery Store Savvy Tours. WinCo, 110 East Myrtle Street. 7 p.m. Buying the healthiest and most inexpensive food isn’t always easy. Understanding this challenge, Health, Wellness and Counseling services has created a tour to help aid students. Instructor Hilary Horton-Brown will teach students how to shop smart on a tight budget. MFA Reading Series Featuring Denis Johnson. Knitting Factory. 7:30-9 p.m. Denis Johnson is the highly acclaimed author of three books of poetry and seven works of fiction, including the classic “Jesus’ Son,” which was made into a feature film of the same name. His most recent book, “Tree of Smoke,” was the winner of the National Book Award. $15 general, $5 students with ID. Proceeds will benefit the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, which matches volunteer advocates with children who are abused, neglected or abandoned, the majority of whom are younger than 6. Galing Galing Festival. Student Union Special Events Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the show starts at 6 p.m. Galing Galing is an annual festival that celebrates Filipino culture. This year’s Galing Galing theme is “Day Off” and will feature stand-up comedy by Dan Gabriel, followed by music and dancing. Following the dance portion of the evening, the festivities will continue in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom D with a buffet of traditional Filipino foods and dance lessons.
