Survey Will Help Determine How Neighborhood Design Shapes Communities

Some residents of Boise neighborhoods will be asked to participate in a survey on how neighborhood design may shape our communities. Approximately 2,000 surveys will be mailed to randomly selected residents of the 36 neighborhoods recognized by the City of Boise. To ensure that each neighborhood is fairly represented in the survey results, it is important that as many surveys from each neighborhood be returned as possible. Each survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. The survey is being conducted by Susan Mason, director of Boise State University's program in community and regional planning.

Information from the surveys will be compared with specific design features, such as the presence of parks or whether a neighborhood’s street plan consists of a grid-pattern or cul-de-sac design. This type of information can enable the creation of comprehensive neighborhood plans that provide the greatest opportunity to build a sense of community in a neighborhood.

Research suggests that neighborhood cohesion can mediate crime and increase volunteerism. Knowing more about the factors that can enhance a sense of community will ultimately be valuable to the long-term growth and development of neighborhoods.

If you receive a survey and have any questions or concerns, contact Mason at 426-2658 or e-mail susanmason@boisestate.edu
