Talking Broncos Start Season Off with Team Win, Six First Place Medals at Golden Eagle Classic

The Boise State University speech and debate team kicked off its season with familiar aplomb by taking the top team prize this past weekend at the College of Southern Idaho’s Golden Eagle Classic in Twin Falls.

In addition to placing first in the overall team sweepstakes, the Talking Broncos also scooped up six first place medals in debate and individual speech categories, as well as six second place medals.

“This was our season opener and we are very pleased with the results and the work the team did to earn them,” said David Bailey, the team’s coach, director of forensics and an assistant professor of communication at Boise State. “We look forward to the challenges that await us as we work our way through the year’s rigorous competition schedule.”

Debate partners Ben Bishop (senior, Meridian) and Kate Henry (junior, Coeur d’ Alene) and partners Regan Charlton (junior, Inkom) and Debra Groberg (freshman, Idaho Falls) “closed out” – won first and second places – in the senior division of parliamentary debate.

Debate partners Reggie Holmquist (junior, Kuna) and Kim Mora (junior, Meridian) and partners Aly Shanklin (freshman, Idaho Falls) and Paul Wardwell (senior, Boise) took first and second in the novice division of parliamentary debate.

Charlton also placed first in extemporaneous speaking, first in communication analysis, and second in informative speaking, while Bishop took first place in impromptu speaking and second in both extemporaneous speaking and persuasive speaking.

Groberg and Ben Larsen (sophomore, Raft River) placed first in duo interpretation, while Groberg also received an honorable mention in prose interpretation. Emil Huseynov (senior, Azerbaijan) placed third in impromptu speaking and earned an “honorable mention” in persuasive speaking.

Aaron Olson (sophomore, Bremerton, Wash.) took first place honors in persuasive speaking and Kate Henry (junior, Coeur d’ Alene) placed second in prose interpretation.

In informative speaking, Andrew Thomas (junior, Idaho Falls) placed third, while Kim Mora (junior, Meridian) and Jordan Park (senior, Idaho Falls) received honorable mentions.

The Talking Broncos’ next tournament is Oct. 10-12 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.
