Boise State Teams with Governor's Office on Kid's Book

Young visitors to the Office of the Governor or First Lady can now take a “tour” of the state of Idaho thanks to a new book titled “Ida Visits the Capitol.” The 32-page book includes information on Idaho history, governors, tribes, land, people, symbols and more. The “tour” is led by Ida Jones, a barnstorming lady pilot of the past who flies across Idaho collecting clues to decode a secret message. A decoder wheel at the back of the book allows children to translate the clues they collect from the Latin state motto — “Esto perpetua” — into English.

The brightly illustrated book is a joint project of First Lady Lori Otter and the Center for Idaho History and Politics at Boise State University. Aimed primarily at fourth-graders (who study Idaho history as part of their academic year), the book is written in a simple and engaging style that easily appeals to all ages. Each page includes interesting facts about Idaho, a timeline related to a specific subject and a topic to prompt further discussion. Several pages also include tips for teachers, such as Web sites, object lessons and places to visit.

Free copies of the book are available at the First Lady's office on the third floor of the Borah Building, 750 W. Bannock St. in Boise. The book was created by Lori Otter, Todd Shallat, Nancy Tacke and Adele Thomsen.
