News Release EVENT NEWS / October 23, 2008 Boise State University to Honor Veterans with New Memorial at the Student Union, Performance Boise State University is set to honor veterans both on and off campus with a new memorial sculpture, “Salute,” that will grace the northeast side of the Student Union Building. The dedication of the sculpture will take place at noon Nov. 11 and will be followed by “Pieces of War: A Veterans Day Evening Performance with Poet Kenny Carnes” at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom. Both events are free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in the Lincoln Parking structure on the corner of University and Lincoln avenues during the events. Highlights of the dedication event will include an Apache helicopter flyover and speakers, including Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Laliberte. “Salute” is part of the extensive Student Union Building renovation. Kay Kirkpatrick’s installation design was chosen after Boise State’s art advisory board reviewed scale model finalists’ comment cards from the university’s students, faculty, staff and the public. A request for veterans memorial proposals was sent to more than 4,000 artists. Kirkpatrick’s “Salute” is a metal-and-stone sculpture featuring the silhouette of a soldier saluting. In her artist’s proposal, Kirkpatrick wrote, “The salute as a gesture symbolizes both answering to duty and the individual who places working toward the benefit of others above themselves.” “This student-initiated, site-specific permanent art installation honoring all veterans not only celebrates a milestone towards the completion of the Student Union expansion, but stands as a tribute to the gratitude that the students, faculty and staff of Boise State University have for those who have given so selflessly,” said Holly Gilchrist, Student Union Fine Arts manager. The performance by Carnes, “Pieces of War,” is a one-man show that weaves together stories from three generations of American soldiers. Carnes examines violence and captures the narratives of soldiers from World War II, Vietnam and contemporary conflicts. Based on interviews, observations, and personal experience, “Pieces of War” seeks resolution through conflict, captures understanding through contemplation, and unites audiences in a common dialogue surrounding the universal journey of the hero in us all.
