“We are very fortunate as an association to have this great teacher as a member and colleague,” IAEA President Joni Cashman wrote in Keys’ award letter. “She has contributed to our organization on many occasions with her time and energy, for which we are grateful.”

Keys has a bachelor’s degree in arts administration and a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Kentucky, as well as a master’s in arts policy and administration and a Ph.D. in art education from The Ohio State University.

She has been actively involved in arts education in Idaho since her arrival in 1999; before arriving at Boise State, she worked for the Idaho Commission on the Arts. She later became director of the Boise State Visual Arts Center and was named assistant professor of art education in 2005. She now serves as the coordinator for undergraduate and graduate art education programs at Boise State, and her research and teaching interests include community arts pedagogy, community-based arts education, art teacher preparation, contemporary art in K-12 art curricula, museum education, arts-based community development, service-learning and multiculturalism.

Keys has been published extensively and regularly presents her research and teaching work at professional conferences. She also serves on the Boise City Department of Arts and History Visual Arts Advisory Committee and works with the Boise Art Museum’s educational programs.

“Dr. Keys is a gifted scholar and instructor,” said Richard Young, chair of the Department of Art. “She is truly an inspiration to aspiring student teachers and has done a fabulous job heading our undergraduate and graduate program in art education.”
