Acii Nancy, a student from Uganda who is the recipient of a unique scholarship at Boise State University, will speak tonight in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom as part of a presentation by the Invisible Children organization. The presentation, which includes the screening of a documentary, is free and open to the public. The event begins at 6 p.m. and Nancy will speak around 6:45 p.m.

Nancy (in Uganda, surnames are placed before first names) began classes at Boise State this fall. Her journey here began with College of Education professor Phil Kelly, who was touched by an Invisible Children documentary about young people who have suffered due to decades-long warfare in northern Uganda. He traveled to Uganda to teach for part of a summer and was so moved by what he saw that he proposed a new scholarship at Boise State to benefit students from that area. Nancy, the first recipient of that scholarship, came to Boise in the late summer. She is currently living with Kelly and his family and will spend the rest of her undergraduate career in Idaho.

Nancy is known as an excellent, moving speaker; before leaving her school in Uganda, she spoke to hundreds of students about the trials she faced in trying to further her education. An orphan, she suffered from malaria but persevered in order to graduate from high school. Her move to Boise marked the first time that she had left her country.

The Invisible Children organization travels the world to raise awareness about the trials that face young people in northern Uganda: disease, relocations and forced conscription into fighting are not uncommon. Representatives from Invisible Children often speak in schools and on college campuses. Their presentation tonight is sponsored by the College of Education.

Nancy has class until 4:30 p.m. but will be available for interviews after that; she will speak as part of the presentation from 6:45-7 p.m. Please call Julie Hahn at 426-5540 for further contact information.
