Idaho Film Collection Releases Final Volume of Filmmaker Nell
Shipman's Works
“From Lionhead Lodge,” the final DVD of the “Nell Shipman Collection”
series, was released this week by the Idaho Film Collection. The Idaho Film
Collection is housed at Boise State University.
“From Lionhead Lodge” contains films that the pioneering filmmaker shot in
Idaho, including her magnum opus, “The Grub-Stake,” from 1922, and three
complete “Little Dramas of the Big Places,” two-reel films shot at Priest
Lake. Surviving frames from a fourth “Little Drama” round out the
collection.
The DVD is also packed with extras for Shipman fans, including the earliest
known surviving home movie shot at Priest Lake and Lionhead Lodge, Shipman’s
studio camp, from 1928; an anthology of 1950s home movies about Priest Lake;
footage of interviews done at the state ceremony dedicating Shipman Point on
Priest Lake in 1977; a 1987 film by Shipman’s son, Barry, the “Making of
‘Grub-Stake,’ ” and the just-completed documentary “At Lionhead Lodge: Nell
Shipman in Idaho, 1922-1925.” The latter premiered in early October at the
international silent film festival Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone,
Italy.
The DVD contains more than four hours of Idaho cinema, including music
scores written and performed by Idaho musicians. The three-volume “Nell
Shipman Collection” was directed by Paul Brand of Pretty Good Productions in
Coeur d’Alene, with technical assistance by Rod Cashin of Boise State
Academic Technologies.
